This one is for your Mom: Happiest of Birthdays!

... to my beautiful mother...

* * *
The older I get, the more I'm thankful I'm turning into my mother.

* * *
... and she wonders why I have two dogs...

However, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.  Our passion for our four legged family members started way before my Mother.

* * *
...like mother like daughter, & granddaughter...

First, I want to thank my Mother.

For my appreciation of getting my degree from an all women's college.  I'll admit, this wasn't my first choice.  But if I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't change a thing.  ...once again, she's right.

"Creativity is inventing, experimenting, growing, taking risks, breaking rules, making mistakes, and having fun." - Mary Lou Cook

However, the couch eventually had to go.

* * *
... Note: this is the same couch in the first picture (that I finally said goodbye to 3 years ago). Sorry Mom!

... for believing in my talents & the support to keep me going.  That sweet little lady would proudly display mine and my brother's artwork around our kitchen growing up, even if she wasn't quite sure what it was.  If it weren't for her words of encouragement, she would have not gotten her Christmas present below.  Thank you for not giving up!

* * *
She is my teacher.

She has taught me how to love.  Family, a good porch, myself, & God.   How important it is to have those relationships.  ...how to love your sibling, no matter what!  (Sorry Hunter, you were stuck with me since 1986!)
* * *
* * *
...how to be independent.  She has molded me into a strong woman (who can mow her own grass!).

* * *
... my brother calls this "Project Short Grass"...
hope you enjoyed your beer...

...the importance of Sundays... and starting them off with breakfast in bed & ending them with popcorn suppers.  Yes.  She did this.  Every Sunday we had cinnamon rolls & OJ brought to us in bed.  (She's a keeper!)  We ended the day with popcorn because...

* * *
Sunday dinners. and by "dinner" I mean middle of the day meal.  Talk about a phenomenal cook! As a woman who now has her own dining room table, I'm very thankful I was taught the proper way to set a table.  To this day, she still corrects me on little things, thank you Mom!

* * *
The importance of friends.

Both old & new.  Those that are "family" and those who I've yet to meet.

* * *
Like mother like daughters.

* * *
... I pray that I am, one day, the mother my mother is to me..
* * *
* * *
Most importantly, she has taught me the power of prayer.

I admire her.

I admire her faith in God and her passion for almost anything in life.

In my Mother's eyes, everyone if family.  We can honestly say, she has never met a stranger, that's for sure!

* * *
Lastly, I'm proud.   There is a difference between controlling your kids and guiding them.  I speak for myself, but I'm sure my brother would agree, that our Mother has been guiding us since day one and I wouldn't want it to be anyone else.

* * *
Happy Birthday Mom, cheers!

... I love you more each day...

It's officially time to Fall

... ah, the most wonderful time of the year...

* * *
"I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers"
- Anne of Green Gables

For me anyways!

Who doesn't love a fun cocktail napkin? Or I like to call them, anything napkins.   They are a necessity.  Whether I need them or not... use them for any occasion!  It is an added accessory to your glass of wine, cup of coffee, or your beverage of choice no matter the day.

Throw it under a cookie or a slice of cheese or just simply use it for decoration.  Love it that much?  You can even frame it (yep, I have done this!)

So, paper towel, you're on the bench.  Sassy cocktail napkin, you're up!

Darlin' go spice things up!

Living in Raleigh I was a frequent visitor of Swoozies.  Just recently I stumbled across one here in Charlotte.  Oh happy day! Gift heaven.  They have everything from cocktail napkins to stationary & most everything in between.

Swoozies is a one stop shop for any occasion.

Let's just say, I recommend taking a look & stopping in!

* * *
"Oh Carolina, you keep calling me home." -

Fall means crisp air & cool temperatures.  And there is nothing better than a hot cider to warm you up!   The fun thing about cider is you can put your own twist on things!  My go-to is below.

Super simple.

Spiked Mulled Cider 4 cups apple cider 1 orange, peel only 4 cloves 3 cinnamon sticks (plus more for garnishing) ¼ tsp nutmeg grated 2” piece of ginger, peeled 8 oz Rye whiskey, divided In a large pot on low heat, gently heat the cider, orange, spices and ginger. Allow to warm for at least 20-30 minutes until mixture is warm and fragrant Add 2oz of whisky to each mug, top with cider.:
* * *
Grab an orange
Stick some cloves in it.
Throw it in your crock pot along with a few cinnamon sticks, bottle of apple cider & your favorite rum.
Turn it on.
Wait 4 hours & poof.
Enjoy!
* * *
Another pantry necessity: styrofoam cups (these can also be found at Swoozies & are a perfect pairing for your hot cider! )

cozy candles + plaid:
* * *
...pull up a seat...

Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the Fall.  Boots. Bonfires. Leaves. Sweaters. Cider. Pumpkins. Scarves. Football. Chili. Snugglin'. Vests. Crisp air.  Love.

... happy fall yall...

Seasons Change, & so do my decorations!

... hello October...

* * *
Halloween is not my thing.

It is just a bunch of hocus pocus... (plus, I hate being scared!)

However, it is an opportunity for me to decorate, so I'm all in on that aspect of the holiday!
* * *
... my kind of Halloween...

I like to mix patterns & styles when dressing my dining room table.

This particular time I went with the fall/Halloween look.  Advice? Think outside of the box! I found these adorable black & white stripe cloth napkins at Tuesday Morning and threw them down with my Pier 1 polka dot dinner plate. There was hesitation, but I loved the outcome of the place setting!

After a failed attempt to find orange candles at the Dollar Tree, I  did not leave empty handed.  I happen to come across plastic black wine glasses... and the best part was they were only $1!  So for eight bucks, eight wine glasses made their way to my table (both inside & on the porch!)

Neutral rustic fall decor- fall in the living room. Great coffee table fall decor.:

white pumpkin inspiration

* * *
A fun way to get a different dynamic is to incorporate different size objects.  For instance: pumpkins.  Where to find?  Trader Joe's & Dollar Tree.   You will see more of this trick in upcoming post this week.

Download, print, and frame this faux chalboard art for a fun way to add interest to your mantel!:
* * *
... my definition of October...

Bottom line: tradition be damned. Decorate for the season in a way that evokes feeling within you.  After all, it's your home.

Weekend Porches

One way to my heart: a good porch.

* * *
 ...the stunning bride, Mrs. Umstead...

... & this weekend I was on several!

My weekend route covered High Point, Raleigh, & ended in Charlotte... stopping on a few porches on the way!

Exhibit A:  The Wooten's
Raleigh
My beautiful friend (inside & out) got married to her best friend & one of a kind man this weekend.  The bridesmaids' luncheon was hosted at the most exquisite home... & my favorite part? The porches. Duh.

* * *
 A quality a porch must have, in my opinion, is to be inviting.  Both Mrs. Wooten's front & side porch (first picture, pictured above) would have reached out and hugged me if they had arms.  I believe it was a mixture of this charming scene & delightful company (another quality a porch must have) that made stop #1 so pleasant.

* * *
A fire place, coffee table books, fresh plants, & a comfy seating area = a home-run.  Incorporating a fireplace into an outdoor porch keeps the invitation open well into the Fall & Winter seasons.... I'll take one on mine, that's for sure!

...Meanwhile... happenings in High Point while I was enjoy wedding festivities & Raleigh porches...

* * *
Sweet Maggie & precious George
(I could just SQUEEZE him)

Exhibit B:  Morgan & Spencer
Raleigh
* * *
Friends since 2009 & instant connection (probably because we both love to entertain & have house guest!) my next porch stop was Morgan & Spencer's, (& of course Penny!) my weekend B&B.   As you can see, they have added their personal touch (hence the "m") to their back porch, making it the best spot to relax on a Saturday morning!

Thank you MEB & Spencer for your fabulous hospitality this weekend (& late night pizza!)

Exhibit C: Casa de Morris
* * *
"Home is not a place, it is a feeling"

Mom & Dad's.  aka  the dogs'  Bed & Breakfast for the weekend.  Pulling up to my parents' house in High Point gives me that "home" feeling, because I know who will be waiting to greet me on the porch.  Home is where my crazies are... I'll claim them!

Exhibit D (& my favorite): Home Sweet Home
Charlotte
* * *
My permanent spot.  Always a glittering feeling after a weekend away.  I couldn't have asked for a better evening on the screen porch, reservation for one. The perfect time to reflect on the amazing weekend celebrating Kristen & John with superb individuals.  It is so good to be home.

... enjoy the little things..

29

... the end of my roaring twenties...

Happy Birthday To Me! #702parkproject #birthday #celebrate:
* * *
" We turn not older with years, but newer every day" - Emily Dickinson

Its funny how your birthday always takes you back down memory lane.  How you spend the day reflecting on your life.  And how you ask yourself "will this year really be the best yet?"

I sure hope so, hello 29!

A lot happens in your 20's.  You graduate college, legally can start drinking (sorry mom!) , you start your first career,  build meaningful relationships, you fall in love & get your heart broken (probably more than once).  You fly the coop & learn what it is to be an "adult".  You start blogs! You become you.

In my twenties I've made mistakes.

What would you tell your twenty-year-old self? - Looking cool is boring. Go out and make some mistakes. Then own them. And grow. And above all, be sure to laugh (a whole lot).:
* * *
"People often say that your 20s are a time to make mistakes.  But what's important about this is not the act of actually making the mistake itself, but rather learning from the lessons these mistakes teach us.  Whether it's a slip up on a relationship or at your job, don't get down on yourself... take it as a lesson learned." - Thank you Lauren Conrad

Making mistakes is being brave.  I'm thankful for my mistakes I made or else I would not be where I am today.  Happy, grateful & in love with life!

Celebrating my first annual 29th birthday! I will continue to celebrate it until I can no longer get away with it :).:
* * *
People often forget that it is your decision on how you want to live the rest of your life.  I've enjoyed my 20's and so far  they have been the best years yet

I'm not the gal that is scared of being "one year closer to 30" I believe that no matter your age, you can have a life that is fabulous & magnificent!

10 home staples that even your guests will appreciate:
* * *
...wine Wednesday...

So,  this is what I want for my birthday:  for YOU to go out & enjoy this day like it is your own!!   This is my thank you, to ALL my friends & family for sending their love today via every social media outlet & snail mail (I love getting mail!).  It sounds cliché, but I am beyond blessed.
Cheers!

Make Yourself at Home!

 - happiness is homemade -

* * *
 ( found at The Blacklion )

I can take a deep breath now, I'm home.  98% unpacked (but still looking for a box with my shoes...hmm...) with 100% satisfaction

Make yourself at home & enjoy!

...& so the tour begins...

* * *
What have I been up to you ask?  This.  Making this house my home.  I'm beyond excited to share this with y'all!  A smile is planted on my face every time I pull into the driveway, I need someone to pinch me!  I have a happy heart.

The Living Room.

* * *
Wide open spaces.

... & now I'm singing the Dixie Chicks...

The best thing about moving is you have a clean, fresh, new slate to decorate.  It is yours. Whatever you decide to do, make sure it makes you happy.  When I stand in my foyer and look into my living room, my heart skips a beat

Everything in my living room is a pleasant mixture of what makes me feel home (including Louise, the photo bomber).

The Bar.

* * *
...May all who enter as guest, leave as friends...

The importance of entertaining.

Entertaining is still a passion priority of mine.  Whether it is a dinner party, wine date, visit from your grandmother, or an upcoming birthday for your brother (this weekend will be my first shin dig in the new digs!) make every occasion a special one.

* * *
Day 2 of moving my grandmother and aunt came for Sunday dinner (good thing I knew which box the good china was in!)  My tip?  Always be prepared for any visitor.

Porch #2.

* * *
"... and I think to myself, what a wonderful world..."

My happy place.  Screened in & the perfect spot for morning coffee, or a glass of wine.  One look & I was hooked.

The Bedroom.

* * *
Yes, I do make my bed every morning.  We can thank my mother for that one.

Again, you never know who might stop by & when (especially after moving into a new house), so making the bed is one less thing you have to worry about!

The Closet.

You never know what you have, until you clean out your closet (or move.)

* * *
"I never think about how other people will respond to the way I dress." - Blake Lively

Although my closet is not like Carrie Bradshaw's, I got that same feeling she did when Big revealed her walk in closet on Sex & the City.   There is even a dedicated spot for my shoes... ahhh.

* * *
"what I love most about my home, is who I share it with"

Maggie & Louise are feeling right at home & are pretty exhausted after days of unpacking (not much help) and exploring their new backyard.  Of course they love the screen porch as much as I do, like mother like daughter!

* * *
... ah, there is nothing like staying at home for real comfort. Good things take time.  So my house will always be a work in progress!

... we are home sweet home, & exhausted...

a BIG thanks to my family & friends who helped make this move an exciting adventure,  love to all!!
